CARRIAGE BY SEA.
THE LIABILITY OF THE SHIPOWNER.
ACT OF 1924 EXPLAINED.
Mr. A. J. Hodgson, M.A., LL.B. (Barrister-at-Law), of Liverpool, addressed a large gathering of the members of the Insurance In- stitute of Liverpool in the Church House, Liverpool, on "The Carriage of Goods by Sea Act, 1924, in Relation to Cargo Insur- ance." Mr. Oscar Prentice, pre- sident of the institute, presided.
Mr. Hodgson said it had been truly said that the merchant who sought to learn something of cargo insurance must free his mind from preconceived ideas, based upon his experience in other branches of insurance. In fire in- surance he had to guard against a single peril, but in cargo insur ance he was confronted with an unlimited number of perils, un- certain conditions, and an almost complete inability to control the fortunes of his venture. The salient fact was that the subject matter insured was not under the control of the assured, but of the carrier or shipowner.
