FINE JANUARY SHIP RECORD.

YARDS STILL BUSY.

The remarkably high production which was the feature of the clos- ing period of 1927, has been' muln- tained during January. Only on one previous occasion has the total! for the first month of 1928 been sur- passed and that was in January 1922 which holds the premier place by a matter of 203 tong. As a rule out- put in January and in July, the two holiday periods, is much below the average, and the achievement in the month under review is excel- lent testimony to the present healthy state of the industry. One unfortunate note is that new con- tracts are very scarce.

over

With orders representing half a million tons on hand it is safe to say that the industry will con- tinue in an almost flourishing con- dition throughout 1928. To keep up the good work, however, new con- tracts are needed. On all sides there is growing optimiam as to fu- ture prospects. Shipbuilders may tone down their enthusiasm by speaking of "qualified and chasten- ed optimism," but the employees and officials express their feelings with greater heartiness. Everywhere there is the will to work for the betterment of the industry, and only the lack of orders may be the re- tarding factor.
