THE MUSIC HALL.
· My connection with the music- hall began, when I was 14 years old, writes Sir Oswald Stoll. At that early age fate had decreed that I should manage or mismanage the business for my mother.

City in Mob's Hands.
Sir Michael, who spoke at the annual dinner of the Old Com- rades' Association of the 25th London, Regiment at Harrods Res. taurant, said:
We knew that, unless sternly and promptly repressed, what had hap- pened in Amritsar would sprend to every station in the north of India. Measures wore taken.

50
years
ago
I obtained a situation with the then famous firm of Messrs. Pinto Leite and Nephews, and worked for a time beside young men now reduced to poverty by the demise of that firm. I work- ed in that way for two years, run- ning between that office and the music-hall in my dinner hour; also working at the music-hall af night, and thinking and compar ing all the time. At the end of two
years my consciousness awoke.
I went to the manager and said: "Sir, I wish to leave here at once!" He replied: "That is rather sudden, but why do you wish to leave at all.” I said: "Last week at the Parthenon Music Hall we made £ profit, and I cannot see when I am ever likely to make that much in a week in any position here." He' looked kindly at me for a little while without speaking, and then he said: "Very well, my boy. Stick to your music-hall, but never tell anyone how much you make in a week." I went.
The moral is clear: Opinions are not to be trusted. Fundamen- tal facts and true causes, even when known, are rarely stated.
