NEED FOR NEW ORDERS. STEAM NAVIGATION CO. LTD.
The statistics of shipbuilding for the last quarter of 1927, com- piled by Lloyd's Register of Ship- ping, made very satisfactory road- Ing. After nearly three years of severe depremion the industry in once more enjoying a moderate de- ared of prosperity, as shown by the relatively large sum of tonnage now under construction. Not only is the British total, viz., 1,579,718 tons, more than double that of the corresponding quarter of 1920, but work la proceeding steadily on al most all new ships, in contrast to the position twelve months ago, when construction had been sus- ponded vessela representing | 100,000 tons of the total then re- corded.
on
The present output of tonnage by British shipyards is greater by 40,000 tons than that of all other countries combined: Of the British total, 200,000 will be registered in, the Overseas Dominions, while 200,000 tons are being built for foreign owners. In view of the keen competitive spirit displayed by Continental shipbuilders, it is Interesting to And that France,

Ege for the past five years, is yet..A, smaller by 185,000 tons than the average for the twelve months pre- ceding the wer. Unfortunately, too, the now tonnage laid down in British yards during the last three months (377,492) is 120,000 less than the tonnage put afloat within the same period. This means, of urse, that the present rate of out- put cannot be austained without a prompt and substantial increase in the volume of new orders. The same holds true of production in other countries, where the tonnage launched in the quarter under re- Kong on the Blue Funnel 8.8.
