The great obstacle is the obtaining of reasonable amplification and selectivity with stability and case! of operation. For if the set is to be really effective it is necessary to employ circuits which can be sharply tuned the desired

signals, and then the difficulty of tuning the many circuits is met with, and usually the whole ampll- fer oscillates unless it is treated very carefully, or rather skilfully. The instability, of course, results from the stray couplings in the re- ceiver, such as the self-capacity of the valves and the wire sand com- ponent parts. As the wave-length is reduced, these effects have be- come more noticeable, because the current which passes through condenser increases as the wave- length is reduced, and so the reac-| tion effect increases,
