MR. MASTERMAN.
LIBERAL EX-MINISTER WHO COULD NOT WIN.
CHEQUERED CAREER.
We regret to announce that Mr. C. F. G. Masterman, died on November 17 in a London nursing home from heart failure, follow ing pneumonia, at the age of 54. He had been ill for some weeks, but the cad came somewhat sud- denly.
The first would deal with him as a melancholy example of the precariousness of the political career. The second would lay stress on the triumph of high courage and brilliant ability over adverse circumstances.

A Fatal Unanswered Letter.
He had perhaps only one not- able drawback, and that was a distaste for the laborious routine which is the lost of every mem- ber of Parliament. It would scarcely be an exaggeration to say that he lost his seat in East Lon-
The formation of the Coalition confirmed his downfall. Liberal Ministers had to be shed whole anle to make room for Conserva- tives; and Masterman, apart from Two sermons might be preach- his electoral bad luck, suffered an additional handicap. But for Masterman himself the war was fatal. He went under in the massacre of the Liberals in 1918. In 1923 he came back, and for a year his personality was dominant in the Liberal side. It

don through his reluctance to an- swer a letter. Every member of Parliament is compelled to give attention to various detailed mat- tera arising in his own consti- tuenry, and a mass of correspondi ence is inevitable. Mr. Master- man avoided this labour whenever possible. Eventually Mry. Masterman-a Lyttelton, with all the Lyttelton qualities who gave him the most devoted assistance throughout his career, took over the correspondence side of his work, attending to it with a sys- tematic care that could not have been surpassed.
Mr. Masterman acted as adviser to Lord Oxford and Asquith when the latter was leader of the Wee Frees in the Coalition. Later he transferred his allegiance to Mr. Lloyd George, and frequently act- ed in much the same capacity. It might be argued, however, that he was in no way inconsistent in this respect; he was opposed to Mr. Lloyd George while the Coali- tion lasted, and gave him all pos sible support when he again be- came associated with Left Wing Liberalism.
A Liberal colleague points out that Mr. Masterman always took a great interest in Church mat- ters. One of his early publica tions was a volume, Tennyson as a Religious Teacher," published in 1889.
