WATEREE” WRECK.

NAVY HISTORIANS AGREE ON REASON.

Washington, Dec. 21. Navy historians have agreed on solution of the wreck of the U.S.S. Wateree, declared: the strangest marine disaster that ever

involved an American vessel..

So far as is known, no one alive to-day witnessed the occurrence when a tidal wave picked up the man-of-war bodily off the Chilean const and deposited it high on the side of a mountain two miles in- land.

The Watcree arrived off Arica in the summer of 1868 from Callao with the storeship Fredonia in tow. Both ships had fled from Callao to escape the yellow fever plague. With a Peruvian man-of-war, the Wateree and the Fredonia anchored in harbour about a mile from shore.

On August 18, the Wateree was overhauling her engines when the ship trembled from stem to stern. The crew ran to the decks. The bay was unruffled but a cloud of dust and smoke was rising from the town. The amazed sailors saw the smoke lift and reveal scarcely a house standing.

A boat crew immediately started for shore and they reached the water's edge, tidal currents swirled In and twisted the Waterco free from her anchor chaine. Daylight turned to darkness and the next thing those aboard the Wateree knew, the ship was lifted as by a giant hand.

The Wateres started moving to- ward land. Sandy water and foam swirled over her decks and a mo- ment later she emerged three miles up the coast and two miles inland. The Wateree was resting on an even keel against the side of a mountain with her port anchor and 100 fathoms of chain laid out intact.

Out of 235 men on board the Wateree, only one was lost. Ins- 17th Jan, 1023pection next day revealed that the tidal wave carried water to a height of forty-seven feet on the mountain side, 200 feet from the ship,
