SPEEDY LINERS.
PLAN FOR TEN ANNOUNCED
IN U.S.
ATLANTIC IN 96 HOURS.
Washington, Oct. 21.
If present plans materialise kcels for ton of the world's fastest pas- senger liners, expable of 'crossing the Atlantie in four days, will be laid in American yards before Spring and the entire fleet, which will cost 150,000,000 dollars to butid, will go into commission by May, 1930.
The final test in a long series was completed here this afternoon in the Washington Naval Basin, with a |twenty-foot_model of the proposed liners,, under conditions simulating a north Atlantic gale, and, accord- ing to engineers present, the per- formance proved that it is feasible] to build liners capable of not only
attaining the speed of thirty-five knots, but which, in doing so will consume less fuel and develop nore horse-power than is now be ing uard per hour by the "Levint- han,"
To-day's tests were arranged by Mr. Lawrence N. Wilder, former president of the American Brown Boveri Company and now chairman of the Advisory Committee of the company's shipbuilding division, which is sponsoring the all-Ameri ean ateamship-aeroplane service.
The parties interested hope to obtain financial help from the Government in constructing the ships. The loan construction fund, which was created to encourage ship construction Marseilles, London, Antwerp & Hull yards, can be drawn on for such in American yards, can be express service, it Marseilles & London Straits & Bombay
