SUGAR BEET.

ADDITIONAL SUBSIDY

REQUIRED.

PRODUCTION INCREASED.

Rugby, Yesterday. Parliament is to be asked to grant an additional £900,000 for the sugar beet subsidy in the present Anan- cial year, bringing the amount of the subsidy this year to £6,400,000. A Supplementary Estimate of the Minister of Agriculture published to-day describes the £900,000 being required for "further provi- sion for the payment of a subsidy on sugar and molasses manufactur- ed from beet grown in Great Bri tain."

38

The explanation of the increase is that the subsidy is paid on the amount produced, and there has been an unforeseen increase in pro- duction. Counterbalancing the sub- Bidy to some extent is the excise duty which, at existing rates on sugar and molasses manufactured from beet grown in Great Britain, is estimated to yield this year £1,800,000.

The net cost to the Exchequer this estimated nt year is accordingly

£3,600,000.

The Supplementary Estimate will be debated in the House of Com- mons on Wednesday.

Members on both sides of the

House have been expressing concern ed as to the effect which the present method of paying the subsidy has hnd upon refiners of imported raw sugar-British Wireless Service.
