Almost unparalleled in the annals of crime in the Colony was an encounter between the Police and an armed robber gang in the early hours of Wednesday morning. After com- mitting a robbery in a restaurant the gang were stopped by a Police picket but they immediately opened fire, shooting a European lance-sergeant. A running fight then ensued, re-. sulting in a Police searcher being killed and Chinese and Indian constables being injured. The casualties among the robbers were one killed, one wounded, and one arrested. One man. only got clear.

Another sensational incident during the week, fully re- ported in the "Overland China Mail," was the attack on the British steamer "Siangtan" on the Yangtze and the capture of Captain Lalor, who was held for ransom.

Affairs in Kwangtung have again claimed considerable attention, the various developments being explained in various explanatory foot-notes by a specialist in Chinese politics.
