After following a path for a few minutes a gorilla barked.

It was close at hand, but the forest was so dense that it was impossible to see more than a few yards jahend.

The pygmies began to cut through the thicket, when suddenly a fiercer bark was heard, and Col. Fean changed his camera for a

In The Tunnel,

Cautiously he entered a gorilla tunnel, which is a run some three to four feet high.

He had not gone many yards when he heard a scream like that of a manine, and a huge gorilla rushed straight down the tunnel at him, its mouth open and its left arm outstretched.

Colonel Fenn fired from the hip at three yards range, and the gorilla, wounded, turned and bolt- .ed.

Sir A. Conan Doyle's Attack. Since the day of his reprieve from the gallows there have been at fre- quent intervals demands by, certain people for Slater'a release on the grounds that he was wrongly con victed. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle the well-known novelist, was one of the leading people who took part in the agitation in favour of Slater's release. In a recent publication | Sir Arthur made a slashing indict. ment of the police of Glasgow, the Lord Advocate of the day (Mr. Alexander Ure, now Lord Strath- clyde), and on the authorities who instituted an enquiry into the case in 1914. The world-wide protest against the execution of Sacco and Tenzetti a few months ago resulted in the intensification of the agita- tion in Great Britain for Slater's

London, Nov. 11.

It is officially announced that Oscar Slater, who was sentenced to imprisonment for life for the mur- der. of Miss Gilchrist, aged 80,, in Glasgow, in 1908, has been released, after having served 18 years' im- prisonment.

The prolonged agitation for his release, in which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has taken a prominent part, was revived and intensified at the

LORD ABERDEEN.

CELEBRATION OF GOLDEN WEDDING.

.London, Nov. 7. The Marquess and Marchioness of Aberdeen and Temair celebrated their golden wedding at a luncheon in Londen, with their 19 descen- dants-children and grand-children and seven of the eight brides- maids who attended the wedding 50 years ago...

one of them told her that he was her husband, who had proceeded to Singapore 18

years ago and was falsely reported to be dead.

Telling her that she was mistaken in wearing widow's weeds, accused added that if she would pay Rs. 50 to his Guru, who had saved him from a frightful death, he would be willing to live a householder's life once again.

The lady and her relatives agreed and paid the money to one of the other thres Sanyasis, who professed to be the Guru, and prostrated

themselves before him.

Thereafter, the supposed hus- bund lived with Mahamayee as man and wife.

After a few weeks, they went for the Festival of Kartikeya, in a temple in the Madura District, where Mahamayee's "husband," after removing her jewellery and other valuables, decamped.

The "husband" was condemned to three years' rigorous imprison- ' ment.
