"THE GAUCHO."

DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS NEW FILM.

More details about the protagon. Ist of Douglas Fairbanks's new film story, "The Gaucho," are made available by the star himself in a communication just received at United Artists' New York Office. "The Gaucho," was in the third week of production at United Artista Studio, Hollywood, when the mail loft.

Scenes of Mr. Fairbanks' films have been veering steadily south- ward: Britain, France, Arabia, Spain, the Antilles, and now the pampas of any. South American nation.

WINTER SEASON RECITALS CONTINUED.

The fourth of the winter season's recitals at the Helena May Institute was given yesterday, the entertain mont, which was based on Roman- tielet Music, being thoroughly en- Joyed by a large audience.

(Chopin)."

Mr. L Chor-chi sang "Strophes de les fils d'eau," and Mendela- sohn's "Winge of Song," Profes- sor 'Gauldi playing the accompani- ments.

Mrs. Sanger's contributions were "Dedication" (Schumann), "Lul- laby" (Brahms) and "Serenade" (Schubert), the violin obligate for the songs being played by Mr. Braga.

The time of the narrative is three generations ago, in the 19th Century. The gaucho duel, old style, will not be seen in the film because Douglas Fairbanks has declared it unsuitable for photographic pur- poses, and no great test of skill," The following description of this grim combat, as given by the star, may interest:

"Two Gauchos knelt on the right knee facing each other. Their left legs were bound together. Over their left arms hung blanket ponchos to be used as shields, and they lunged and parried with long knives until the first mortal wound."

POST-WAR COMEDY.

Besides a naturally endowed beautiful voice, musical gift, intel- lect, strength, and charm of per-. sonality, one must have persever ance, an extraordinary capacity for studious, work, and, of course, the wherewithal:

We must admire ambitioa, and be sympathetic always with young as-

pirants. At the same time, the above essentials should be well con- sidered by those who are urged by false benefactors to go abroad in search of fame.

TO APPEAR IN BRITISH FILM.

Fow film plans have caught the public imagination so instantly as that now, announced for the screen- ing of Nurse Cavali.

Mr. Horbert Wilcox, the British producor responsible for this idea, leaves for Brussels shortly, accom- panied by Captain Reginald Berkeley, who is writing the story, and scenes will be taken in the very footsteps of the heroic nurse.

What she did will be re-told on: the screen in terms of history, not of sentimentalisation.

"She did a man's job," says Mr. Wilcox, "and we're going to show her doing it. What is more, we shall bring in either as part of the story for symbolically all the other women of the war who were doing a man's job-the land girls, the shell-makers, the car conductors, thei ambulance drivers. This film is dedicated to the women of the war.”

Mr. Wilcox and Captain Berkeley have approached the German au- thorities for further data, and inter- esting new facts have been learned from the Berlin doctor who attended Nurse Cavell and was responsible for hor burial (anys the "Evening Standard");

Baron von Bissing, who signed the death warrant, will appear in the film, and so will Burgomaster Max. Another famous character is Captain Fryatt, who will be im personated.

Miss Pauline Frederick, who is to recreate the character of Nurse Cavell, has now decided not to ap pear as Florence Nightingale. It is an odd coincidence that an Amer- ican actress had the choice of play- ing the parts of two women famous in our history.

A Gallipoli Film. Mr. A. S. Bundy, addressing the 1 shareholders in British Instruction- al Films (Proprietors), Ltd., at the statutory meeting in London re- cently announced that the company had just completed arrangementa

with the Admiralty to make a film of the Gallipoli campaign.

"It has been decided," he said,

to take the novel, 'Tell England," by Ernest Raymond, and weave into it the incidents of the campaign, It is hoped that the film will be com- pleted by about April, and released for the autumn of next year."

Mr. Bundy also said that the Air Ministry had selected the company to undertake the production of a film dealing with the Royal Air Force, and Major Beith ("Ian Hay") had been naked to write an appropriate story.

Hislop and Faust. Joseph Hislop is probably the greatest Britlah exponent of grand operatic tenor roles heard to date in Australia (says the Sydney "Sun") and hearing him sing the arias from "Manion," "Pagliacci,' "Boheme," "Tosca," and "Turan dot" during his recent recitals one casily understood his popularity at
