A BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE A DELIGHTFUL PROGRAMME.

A concert arranged by the St. Andrew's Troop of Boy Scouts, in aid of Dr. Barnardo's Homes, was held in St. Andrew's Church Hall, Kowloon, on Saturday evening. There was a good attendance, and a tidy little sum of money and colleet- ed by sale of tickets and pro- grammes for very deserving cause.

I have just received a long and chatty letter from my old friend and, I think I can say, Hong Kong's old friend-"Dick" Norton, who, writing from Lahore under date, October 24, appears to be in the beat of health--and spirits. New Artistes. Following the course adopted by Mr. Salisbury, Mr. Norton has prae- tically completely changed his com- pany. With the exception of his talented wife (Miss Lolla Forbes) and that popular light comedian (whom the present writer once des- cribed as a second Laddle CHIT), the company is entirely new, and, judg ing from the aforementioned Press- cuttings, ono quite capable of hold ing its own against contemporary entertainments. Dick appears to have spent his time at Home in searching for just that type of song which he knows so inimicably how to "put across the foot-lights." He is playing arnong other numbers which make up a most extensive repertoire of new songs-the role of a drunkard who returns home late at night and is confronted by his irate wife. As no fewer than five Indian papers to discuss the sequel agree that would be to spoil the enjoyment of the audience, I. will not let the "cat out of the bag." (Dick gives me a brief resume of the 'plot.)

Altogether, I gather that this is a show for which we can look for- ward with the keenest anticipation.

Delightful songs, which were well applauded, were offered by Mra. Robson, who sang in both parts of the programme, by Mrs. W. R. Flaming and Mr. H. Glover, who also appeared in the latter part of the programme.

Two very enjoyable items were "Memories of the East End" by the Misses V. Capell and R. Wong, and "A Lovesick Couple" by Miss V. Capell and Mr. C. D. Lake, whilst a well rendered quartette by Mesars. J. W. Baldwin, R. Baldwin, H. J. Best and C. W. E. Bishop also appealed immensely, and they were deservedly well applauded for their effort.

Instrumental offerings included two violin soles by Mr. J. Braga, with piano accompaniment by Prof. Harry Ore, and two banjo solos by Mr. J. Davidson..

A big helping of humour was served up by Eng.-Lieut.-Comdr. Bedells with "Diversions" and "More. Diversions," by Mr. V. C. Labrum with a humorous recitation, and by Mr. J. Grenham, who is a very good comedian in spite of the query against his item on the programme. During the interval the Aimai Orchestra rendered some excellent music.

Mr. J. B. Powell cables from Shanghai to the "Manila Bulletin" on Monday last:-

According to British sources the Nationalist Government to- day received a shipment of 440) chests of Turkish opium which is being sold through the official! Government Opium Bureau. The value of the shipment is $1,250, 000 gold.

The reports allege that the opium was brought from Turkey on a Japanese ship to Woosung from whence it was brought to Shanghai by a Chinese gunboat.

LIMITATION OF OPIUM.

EXCEEDED BY CHINESE.

A Chinese was charged before Major C. Willson At the Central Magistracy on Saturday with being in possession of five more tacle of Government prepared oplum than are permitted by the Ordinance.

The charge was an unusual one, and was-the-first-to-be-brought up before the Court for many years.

Mr. F. E. Loseby, in appearing for the accused, stated that it was admitted that the latter bought the drug from Government dealer without knowing the limitation set by Government on the amount of theso purchases.

Major Willson imposed a fine of $1,000.

Mr. Loseby pointed out that ball which had been allowed to the ac- cused, amounted to only $100.

This small ball reflected the Gov- ernment view of the offence, which was not often brought before the Courts.

Senior Revenue Officer George) im- Watt said his Worship had posed a penalty which was only im-j posed in the more serious cases of possession of non-Government opium.

His Worship thereupon reduced the penalty to $100, saying that he had misunderstood the position.

His Worship also made the con- fiscation order applicable to only five taels of opium, the that the accused had in excess.

DANCE AT TAIKOO.

AL STOVALL'S IMPERIALISTS

The fourth dance of the season at the Taikoo Recreation. Club was held on Saturday night, and was considering the well attended, large number of counter-attractions

in town.

The most attractive feature of the gathering was the presence of Al. Stovall's "Imperialists" from the s.s. "President Grant," which

is

now undergoing repairs in Taikoo dock. This is one of the most efficient orchestras heard for a very long time here. Every plece of a lengthy dance programme (which included the Eightsome Reel and the Caledonians) was en- cored and deservedly so.

Pipers Carstairs and Young con- tributed in no small measure to the of the function, as did success Messrs. J. Watson and J. Coyle as M.C.'s.
