Thomas Sharpin, an unemployed British searman who had previously been in trouble before Mr. R. E. Lindsell for disorderly conduct at the Seamen's Institute, wÂB this morning produced before Major C. Willson at the Central Magistracy, when Sub-Inspector Elston naked for an order to have the man sent to the House of Detention, as ha was destitute'with no means of sùp- port. According to the Inspector, Sharpin came to Hong Kong or board an American ship, and com. Ing ashore, he missed his ship. Work was found for him on a Bri- tish boat, but he got drunk on the same day and again missed his ship. The Magistrate made the order asked for.

Shipping circles in Singapore have heard with much regret that Capt. T. Smith, of the Red Funnel (Heap Eng Moh) Line, has died in hospital at Cheribon,
The late Capt Smith, who was about 65 years of age, came up to Singapore shortly after the war from Australia, where he had been for many years. His son is the master of the "Rajah of Bara- wak," and he leaves a widow and two daughters.Straits Times.
