THE CHINA MAIL,
CLYDE STEAMERS.
DAVID MACBRAYNE'S EARLY ENTERPRISE.
"ROYAL MAIL" BOATS.
In the earlier days of the Clyde passenger steamors there were many prominent family names as- sociated with the building and man=" agement of these but only three now survive in active business- Williamson and Buchanan fin amalgamation) and David Mac. Brayne.
Whatever changes may take place in the future, the name of David MacBrayne will always be closely | associated with the development of Isteamer traffic between Glangow and the scattered islands of the Western Highlands.
MacBrayne's Forerunners,
It is remarkable to recall that West Highland trade claimed the attention of steamboat owners in the carilest days of the industry, for the first steamer, Comet L., launch. ed in 1812, was 1819 placed on the route to Fort-William via the Crinan Canal, and did the double trip weekly. She came to grief in the vicinity of Crinan in 1820, and
in the following year her place was taken by Comet II, which came to a disastrous and off Gourock in 1825.
In the 20's and 30's' of last cen- tury a number of boats, variously owned were occupied in the West Highland trade, and among other owners were Mosara, G. and L. Burns, who had great ambitions then with regard to Clyde steamer business. To attain their end they made a sweeping reducion of taron, hut apparently the result was not satisfactory, for about 1850 they de cided to confine their energies to deep-sea traffic and sold off their Messrs. West Highland boats
David Hutchison and Co. Mr. Hut- chison had been a clerk in the office of Messrs. Burns, and there were also family connections. Fifty years ago the Hutchison business was acquired by Mr. David Mac- Brayne, and is still being carried. on under that world-famous name.
