LIEUT. KOPPEN.
PROPOSED EASTERN AIR SERVICE,
INTERVIEW IN SINGAPORE.
Lieut, Koppen, who with an- other pilot named Frankis, pass- ed through Singapore on October 9 on the Holland-Java flight, carrying the first air mail to the east arrived in Singapore on Octo- ber 17 on the return journey.
Lieut. Koppen, who experienc ed no trouble of any kind on the outward trip, had the same good report to make, on the first stages of the homeward journey.
The flight was to be a test of the possibilities of a regular Dutch air mail and passenger ser vice to the East, a proposal for the institution of which is now under consideration before the Dutch Parliament. It is of in- terest therefore to record that so Har the fight has been attended by no untoward circumstances.
As stated in the "Straits Times" some time back, the pro posed air service will be so con- trived that flight will be by day only, and the charge by passen- ger will include hotel costs.

FRENCH EDITOR'S VIEWS.
Major L. A. M. Jones, Economic Editor of "Le Temps," writes in the "Sanday Graphic:
Two great French chefa once broke up a life-long friendship over
a discussion as to the value of pepper In cooking; one maintained that it helped the appreciation of fine foods; the other, that it tend- ed to detroy the finer perceptions of the sense of taste.
Now, there is
kind of "moral pepper" which the public of 1027 has acquired the habit of taking by the spoonful, so to speak, and regarding the harmfulness of this brand of mental seasoning there can be no doubt.

Johannesburg, Sept. 16. The executive conneil of the African National Congress han sought legal opinion to test legality of the Motor Vehicle (Further. Amendment) Ordinance, whieh prohibits natives from driv- those ing motor vehicles, except owned by non-Europeane.
The ordinance was discussed to- day by the executive, who declared that it would throw hundreds of natives out of employment and create a feeling of hostility against white people.
It was pointed out. by several speakers that natives had in, the past helped in the development of the Industries of the country, and consequently were entitled to the fruits of their labour.
The probibition of men driving motor-vehicles solely on grounds of colour war a gross injustice and a violation of the principles of Christianity and fairplay.
After a long discussion the coun ell, adopted a resolution protesting Against the ordinance, which, they argued, would add fuel to the already flaming native unrest, in the country, and would certainly
ccentuate race hostliity.!
