The war in the north is still the main consideration in matters Chinese. The Fengtien forces have recaptured a number of the places taken by the Shansi troops in the initial advances, but the latter is by no means a spent force.

Around Peking, for instance, the Shanti soldiery have been making things warm, and there has been much unrest in the capital, parties of would-be invaders having managed to approach the city in the rear of the main Fengtien force, which is moving south in pursuit of its small enemy.

Complications in the war situation during the week, as outlined in the "Overland Mail," have been many. It is said that Wu Pei-fu may take a hand, though this is considered improbable. Nanking, however, has definitely declared de- fiance to Fengtien, for what the declaration is worth, and

Canton, in turn, has pledged support to Nanking.

The likelihood of a combined "Southern" move against our Chinese Chang Tso-lin and the North generally, ar observers emphasise, is far off, however, and before long the Northern campaign, owing to approaching inclemencies of weather, will no doubt terminate at least for a few months.

This week's issue- also contains all the local news, social. commercial and sporting, with a full description of the Inter- port bowls match against Shanghai, written by an expert.

YILDIZ CASINO-FARCE.

"CAUSED RUIN OF MANY TURKS."

Constantinople, Oct. 4. The ruin of many Turks is given as the reason for the closing of the Yildiz Casino, which has not fulfilled the expectation that it would attract tourists with plenty of money to spend..

The closing of the Casino took the form of a police raid. The Public Prosecutor on his arrival at the gate of the palace grounds posted a policeman near the tele- phone there to prevent any warn- ing of his intention to enter and close the Salle de Jeu..

It appears from published de clarations by, the Public Prosecu- tor that after the Casino had been opened for a year it was suddenly decided that games of hazard were illegal in Turkey, and con- sequently the concessionaire of the palace is to be summoned,

Ridiculous Affair,

The whole affair from begin- ning to end can only be described as ridiculous, and the manner of closing the palace cannot be pos sibly considered legally justifi- able.

When the concession was granted a year ago the terms, which appeared in all the news papers, clearly stated that in the Yildiz. Casino games of hazird would be permitted.

Signor Maria Serra, the conces- sionaire, spent £20,000 on decora tions and the transformation of the palace into a casino, and at the inauguration the Minister of the Interport himself formally, opened the Balle de Jen.
