AMERICA & CHINA.
SAME SYMPATHY BUT APATHY.
"PROBLEM 'DOES NOT EXIST.”
"During my four months' atay, in the United States, I could see no. change in the attitude of the people toward China," said Mr. V. G. Lyman, member of the Muni: cipal Council and former asalatant manager of the Shanghai branch of the Standard Oil Company of New York. The same sympathy for China seemed to prevail. Mr. Lyman said, but with rather a touch of apathy, as if people felt that while China should be allow ed to work out her problems alone in any way she saw fit it did not particularly concern the American people as to what way she went about it.

RUSE THAT FAILED.
On Friday morning the following paragraph appeared amongst the police reports:-
"Escaping from the charge room at the Bay Vlow Police Station yesterday, (Thursday), a Chinese prisoner ran up the hill at Whitfield. He was chased by the Pollee, and whileʼrunning he slipped and tumbled down the hill. He was rendored uncon- scious as the result of the fall, and is believed to have suffered internal injuries. The man was removed to the Government Civil Hospital."
The case had a sequel before Mr R. E. Lindsell at the Central { Magistracy on Saturday morning, when the would-be fugitive was

Utter unconcern as to the fate of American investments in Chinatives of the party and the govern-charged with assaulting a Chinese seemed to be the general attitude ment. for many supposedly well inform- ed people say that if Americans do not like the way they are treat od in China they might as well get out, said Mr. Lyman, for nobody compels them to live there. Hence, he inferred, the China problem did not exist so far as the general run of Americans is concerned-cer tainly it was not a problem of moment.
Other things were the chief con- cerns of Americans. They had their own country to look after and, Mr. Lyman, observed, they doing it fairly well: He passed part of his vacation In Scott's Bluff, Nebraska, once part of the "great American desert."
