A GREAT PARTNERSHIP.
On August 27, 1870, was begun that great partnership between the White Star Line and Messrs. Hat- land and Wolff, when the famous "Oceanic," an iron four-masted barque, of 3,707 tons, and the com- pany's first steamer, was launched at Belfast. She was one of the first ships of the type that her builders later perfected, but at that time they were not capable of construct- ing such powerful machinery, and accordingly her engines were sup. plied by the Thames. The original intention had been for her to run on the Australian trade, for which purpose the Oceanic Steamship Company had bought the name and house flag of the White Star Line, but instead she was placed on the New York run. Her design differ ed radically from that of her pre- decessors in that she was long and narrow, and had her first-class ac- commedation amidships instead of aft, as it had been in the old sailing ships, and as it had been still kept In spite of the discomfort of the screw. Her engines were built on novel lines, four-cylinders et pound and arranged so that each pali of cylinders formed a complete engine in case of accidents. Among the in- atallations which previously had not

EFFICIENT CARGO
STEAMERS.
The reference which was made to. the Dutch cargo steamer "Borneo's" now 500 lbs. pres- sure reciprocating engine must have given many readers food for serious thought. This vessel, of 3,800 indicated horse-power and 12 knots speed, is the first vessel pro- pelled by a reciprocating engine to make use of steam at 500 lbs. per square inch pressure and superhext- ed to a high degree. Originally she was an ordinary triple-expansion engined ship, but Messrs. Werks- poor, of Amsterdam, wore given the job of converting her engines to uso high-temperature ateam at the very high pressure mentioned. No doubt the success which has attended the use of the Lentz poppet valve mar- ine steam engine with high super- heat impressed the designers of the altered engines for the Horneo, be- Before commencing her sailings cause double-heat poppet valves are to Canada the "Laurentic" will used in this installation.
