COAL RESOURCES.

POSITION IN GREAT BRITAIN.

One effect of the coal strike, and of the Royal Commission which preceded it, has been undoubtedly to make the development of the coal industry a matter of greater concern than before, not only to the general public and its political leaders, but also to the industry itself. The effect of this heighten- ed interest in fuel problems is seen on behalf of the Fuel Research Board of the Department of Scien tific and Industrial Research, to- gether with the appended report of Dr. Lander, the Director of Fuel Rosearch.

The witness proceeded to detail other meetinge, the following day, at a coffee shop and at a liquor shop, in which two other Chinese were engaged in negotiating for a "aettlement, this being finally ef- fected by the payment to him by the accused, at a liquor shop meet- Ing, of $150,

ad-

The effect of the storm and the changing wind and light caused many targets to be missed. In the circumstances, the scores of 30 and 32 out of 50, made by Miss Dayson and Mrs. Barnes, are regarded by experienced marksmen as being most praiseworthy (says a corres- pondent of a London paper), and there is general admiration of their pluck.

RED JOANS.

SOVIET'S WOMEN SOLDIERS IN MANOEUVRES.

The Soviet newspaper "Izvestia" reports that women reserves, armed and equipped in the same way as regular troops, are being used for the first time in the Red army's

autumn manoeuvres.

Their training is identical with that of male reserves, and they take part in sham battles, in some dis- tricts male battalions fighting female troops.
