KUTWO FIFTY-FIVE MINUTES UNDER FIRE.
SERIES OF ADVENTURES.
A passenger on the s.s, "Kutwo" of Messrs. Jardinc, Matheson & Co.'s fleet has furnished the "C. C. Post with the following-account of incidents which occurred during the journey from Shanghal. It in- dicates the lawlessness of the Southern soldiers in a striking way,

Some distance above Chinklang about a thousand Northern soldiers were seen marching down the South bank towards Chinklang, and there was no sign of any opposition to their progress.

The Captain took no time to dress but dashed to the bridge in his bare feet. The steamer put on full speed, expecting every minute to get out of the danger zone. But the troops were bent on murder and the for seven miles the firing was taken aheup by aquad after squad.
Shots At The Bridge. During the night before "Kutwo" reached Chinkiang had been compelled to anchor for a time. It seems that martial law had been proclaimed at one point on the river, but instead of sending out a notice or letting a launch con- vey the order, the Southern military simply fired at the bridge of the steamer. The Captain had just stepped back under a sudden im: pulse when one of the shots crossed the bridge from end to end.
"Ladybird" in Action, Late in the afternoon H.M.S. "Ladybird" arrived at Chinkfang "It with the down-river steamers. was at once obvious that she had been in action. Enquiries elicited the fact that the vessels under her care had been fired upon from both banks. She had replied with her six-inch guns as well as with her other equipment.
A Gallant Rescue. The six vessels that had assem- hled fell into line at six alm. on Friday, expecting to leave under the care of the "Ladybird." But the start was delayed til H.M.S. port she bore ample evidence of the determined, effort of the soldiery to obtain, casualties, for there was hardly a window whole while such things as ventilators and funnel casing, which are made of thinner metal, were amply perforat- ed. The deck houses on the "Slang- wo," are of steel construction; but this left the decks open. It was therefore most fortunate that no casualties resulted, for no less. than 67 hits were Inter counted on the bridge and promonade decke.

Nanking. The Southerners cannot offer any adequate excuse for their action, for this part of the river had not been declared under martial law. Thus, without having received any warning, the "Slangwo" continued on her way till about ten o'clock at night, when

shot was fired from the bank and narrowly missed two of the foreign passengers on board. A little later another rifle bullet hit the pro- menade deck. Then came the con- cert, which, although chiefly coming from the south bank, had also an accompaniment from the north shore. The shooting was deadly, and the passengers lying for safety on the decks were nearly deafened by the bang of bullets on the iron. It would seem that the riflemen Hong Kong Manila were chiefly atming at the bridge, and one bullet hit the middle pane of glass sending it to smithereens. Both on the Kutwo and the Siangwo passengers have|- no praise high enough for the con. duct of the officers on board these vessels. Above Chinkiang on the North side there were hundreds of junks full of Northern soldiers. The junks were evidently waiting for a signal to move and there was no sign of life on the South bank,
