(Comdr. J. B..(through). Newili, D.S.O., R.N.) after hearing. the evidence dismissed the charges against these men.

Various hawkers, three of whom were unlicensed, were fined $10 or ten days for being aboard without permission.

Costly Enterprise. One enterprising hotel runner who boarded the s.8. "Haimun" by means of a bamboo pole as the ship was under way, was fined $20 or three weeks imprisonment.

Two small boys who were found aboard the "Takliwn" were not old enough to be sent to prison.

His Worship asked the Police re presentative what he should do with

them.

Sub-Inspector Brown said that they seemed too small for the birch

but they were not too young to steal

from the ship.

His Worship addressed the boys and asked them if they thought twelve strokes of the birch would act as a deterrent in future.

As they seemed sufficiently ap. prehensive of such treatment, His Worship idicated that he would not enforce the caning but would let them off with a caution.

There were other small cases be- fore the court, including the sum- moning of boat owners for carry- Ing insufficient lights and lying Inshore.

These were fined $15 and $10 respectively.

Similar Instructions. Two days later, on September the manager of the Ting Hing Bank received another letter from the Kam Fat Bank of Can- ton giving him similar instruc- tions with regard to the collec- tion of $19,500, but contrary to the earlier letter, he was asked;

the to pay the money over to Wo Fat Shing firm of Wing Lok Street, who would credit the amount to the Canton bank.

The Canton bank was imme- diately communicated with and it was then learned that the first letter was a forgery. Apparent- ly some crooks had received in- side

information about the transaction and had forestalled the manager of the Canton bank by sending the forged letter to the Ting Hing Bank two days ahead of the other.

The scheme worked, and somebody is now the poorer by $19,500.

A visit was paid to the Yuen Wah Cheung firm at No. 6 Ko- Fshing Street but it was found suspended that the firm had "business" and the place locked up. The manager of the Yuen Wah Cheung firm who had re- ceived the money and given a receipt for it has disappeared.
