We regret to record the death of Commander W. E. Wakefield, who was killed by rubber smug- glers whilst on patrol duty in com- mand of the Malay States Cua- toma vessel "Lalat," off Singa- pore, says the "Nautical Maga- zine." For some years rubber smuggling on the coast has been in

progress, and all kinds. of measures have been resorted to by the law- breakers-who are nothing short of pirates-for there is much to be gained by these people in the traffic and consequently they run great risks. There have been ex- citing times on the coast between smugglers and the patrol vessels, but none quite so fierce as that which befell the "Lalat:" it is usually the patrol ship that holds the whip-hand. Commander Wakefield served his apprentice- ship in the barque "Carnmoney" and also in the "Birkdale" of Liverpool. On his first volage in the "Carnmoney" his ship was sunk by a German submarine and it was reported that the comman- der of the submarine had former-
