Milionaire Drowned.
News from Sudbury (Ontario)-| states that Mr. W. L. Hodgekins, a Chicago millionaire, and two of the crew were drowned to-day when a speed boat caught fire in Georgian Bay, Lake Huron.

A statement issued by the US. Department of Commerce shows that the world's automobiles number 27,500,000, of which 95 per cent. are of American origin, though a large proportion is assembled by foreign branches. At the monthly meeting of the Western Australian Institute of Advertisting. Mr. A. H. Abbott, of Abbott and Rich, delivered an address on posters. Signwriting, remarked Mr. Abbott, was by no means a modern art. Examples of its extensive use could be traced back to the ancient cities of China, Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece. After referring to the difference between signwrit ing, which_to-day was essentially the lettering of windows, office signs, etc., and the work of a poster artist, who WAS more concerned with design and atten- tion value, Mr. Abbott proceeded to demonstrate by a series of miniature posters, the elements of effective poster design. A general discussion followed.

A silver-grey homing pigeon, bearing on its leg a racing ring marked N.U.R.P. 23. L.B. 841, was caught on the deck of the.. liner "Leviathan," when the ves- sel was 100 miles off Cherbourg. The bird was in an exhausted condition. It belonged to a mem- ber of the Liverpool Homing Society, and was later released by the officials of the United States Lines' Southampton office.
