Nanking Chief's Retirement Confirmed.

RETURNS TO NINGPO;

Takes Small Body of Guards From Shanghai,

TENSE SITUATION NOW CREATED IN SHANGHAI.

Reports received in Hong Kong this morning from reliable Chinese sources confirm the resignation of Chiang Kai-shek as Nationalist war lord. It is also said that he has retired to Ningpo, taking with him a personal guard. His army chiefs, advisers, etc., are now in Shanghai, where the situation is tense.

Another message received this morning states that General Feng Yu-hsiang has withdrawn his troops from Chichow. He has sustained no military defeat, but has made this move in order to prevent the Shantung army attacking the Lunghui railway.
