Six of Japan's newest ocean- going submarines, after a 4,000-mile voyage to the South Sea islands, recently returned to their home port at Yokosuka but three of them were forced to limp in because of defective motors, according to meagre Information obtained from the Navy Department.
The submarine cruise was made. for the purpose of testing new de vices invented by the Japanese navy and to test the endurance of the crews. The under-aea boats were 1,500 and 2,000 tons. Outside of stating that the trial trip proved satisfactory, except for the motor troubles of three of the submarines, navy officials declined to give any information regarding the cruise,

DEATH OF AMERICAN SHIPBUILDER,
Barnstable (Mass.), Aug. 3. Rear Admiral Francis Tiffany Bowles, former general manager of the United States Shipping Board and America's leading shipbuilder, died at his home here 'to-day. He was almost 69 years old.
He was a graduate of the United States. Naval Academy and studied naval architecture in England. He served in the navy for 15 years and in 1901 was given the rank of rear admiral as chief constructor of the United States Navy,
He had his own shipbuilding com- pany in Quincy, Massachusetts, and was nationally prominent as an offi- cial of various naval societies.- United Press.
