While this remarkable progress in transportation has been going on,, wireless telegraphy, owing parti- cularly to the genius of Senator Marconi, has been placed at the sex vice of the British peoples. When the first signals were sent through the ether, it was said that wireless. telegraphy would in time supersede the cable.
rates.
Owing to this latest achievement of Senator Marconi, it will in no, long time be possible for the most isolated communitles of the British Empire to keep in touch with the great centres of population in B manner which would have been re- garded as impossible a few years,
There is now every assurance that beam wireless will be adaptable to wireless telephony and there is also the possibility of superimposing commercial telephone channel upon high-speed telegraph services using the same aerial system, thus obviat Ing the cost of erecting separate stations for carrying out telephonic communications.

Empire Broad-Cast Stations, The advantages which the beam system possesses over the high- powered system are claimed to be numerous :-
(a) The capital expenditure is less.
(b) The stations can be operated with a comparatively small amount of electrical power, and there is an economy in running costs.

SUGGESTIONS FOR SOLVING CROSS-WORD PUZZLES
Start out by filling in the words of which you foul reasonably sure, These will give you a clue to other words crossing them, and they in turn to still others. A letter belongs in each white space, words starting at the numbered squares and running either horizontally or vertically or both
(The solution of the above cross-word puzzle will appear in to-morrow's issue along with a new cross-word puzzle.}

Two famous British pilots, Captain R. H. Macintosh and Lieut.-Colonel F. F. Minchin, are privately planning to conquer all Atlantic flying records for Bri- tain by flying from London to New York for the first time, re- fuelling there in eight hours, and flying straight back to Europe. They hope to be back over Europe within 80 hours of leaving Eng- land. They will take turns at piloting the machine, and will only remain in New York long enough to refuel and glance over the engine.
