AN OVERLOADED SHIP. An important decision was given recently in an appeal before the Lord Chief Justice, Mr. Justice Avory and Mr. Justice Salter, in a case arising out of the arrival of a steamer at Hull with her Plimsoll mark submerged. The vessel was loaded with timber, more than quarter of which was en deck. When she left her loading port in the Baltic her load line was not submerged, but she ran into a gale, and shipped water, which saturated her deck load and sent her deeper in the water. The Court found against the master, the view, being held that it was not a question of how the ship rode at her loading port, but how she would ride at sea.
