UNIQUE SEA HISTORY

12,000 ITEMS COLLECTED IN

TWENTY YEARS.

The only complete sea-history of the English-speaking race is housed in an attic in Henrietta Street, W. Now it is threatened with dispersal.

These 12,000 books, prints, paint-: ings and atlases, which it has taken Mr. A. G. HI, Macpherson over 20 years to collect, contain at least six collections which are the finest in the world, and their educational value is enormous; but the owner told a "Daily Chronicle" representa- tive that efforts to get them estab Hished as a national collection had

failed,

Something of the romance of this unique collection, which has at- tracted Royal visitors to the attic, was related by Mr. Macpherson.

"I started collecting pictures of the old tea Clippers," he said, "for I inherited a love for all things of the sea from my father, Sir William Macpherson, and gradually, the idea came to me of getting this collection together. Now I have the following items:-250 on naval discovery, 2,560. on naval actions, 1,002 on naval ships, 1,000 por- traite, 753 salling ship pictures, 1,007 on steamships, 428 on yacht- ing, 2,654 scaport records, 300 whaling prints and 280 atlascs.

"When came to England from India in 1919," Mr. Macpherson added, "I shipped home a con- siderable part of my collection; but the vessel struck a rock and went down. I was assured by the steamship company that I had lost the collection, but six months afterwards it turned up safe and undamaged. It had been salvaged, and, as the specimens had been packed in tin-lined cases, they were perfect.

"There is no part of the English and French coast I have not ex- plored for specimens for my collec tion, but almost all the really good things have been picked up in London.

"To-day there is an increasing in- terest in these things, especially in America, and it looks as though my collection will go there."
