MOB ATTACKS JAIL,
STREAMS OF AMMONÍA USED
IN DEFENCE.
A frenzied mob of 2,000 people was held at bay by local officera guarding the county jall, at Tampa (Florida), but only after a dozen persons, including, one woman, had been wounded.
The mob was in search of a pri- soner named Levins, who was re- ported to have confessed to having murdered an entire family of live persons of the name of Merrill.
Streams of ammonia, directed by the chemical squad of the local fire departments, were used to repel the attackers, but they refused to dia- perae. Some took up a position in a negro church opposite the jail, from which fire was opened. Others used heavy timbers as battering rams against the walls of the jail.
In one attack 80 men succeeded in: breaking through one of the walls, but two of the attackers who fell into the hole thus made were im- mediately arrested.
At daybreak a company of the Militia arrived. The mob's sharp- shooters continued firing on the falli until it was reported that two more companies of the Militia were on their way. Then the rioters dis- persed.
