HANKOW POSITION.

Again Reported To Be Very Precarious.

Hankow's position is considered to be precarious, and the situation serious.

In Communist circles it is un- derstood that all efforts will be made to keep possession of Hunan and Hupeh. General Feng Yu- hsiang is to be opposed. If, how ever, the "Christian General" gets through to Hankow, there will be a general fall back on Kwangtung.

Tang Still Red. Feng Yu-hsiang has consulted Tang Seng-chi regarding a move on Hankow. Reports state that Tang is still in, favour of a Com- munist regime.

Chang's Plans, Marshal Chang Tso-lin is re- ported to have declared that if Yen Shi-shen and Feng Yu- hsiang refrain from attacking Chihli he will give up Shantung. "Hong Kong Evening Post."

• Chiang at Shanghai.

Shanghai, July 4.

General Chiang Kai-shek paid

a visit to Lunghwa and there inspected his troops, as well as those stationed in Shanghai city This evening he is taking part in a public dinner and expects to return to Nanking on July 7.

It is reported that a division of the General's army has passed Hai Ho and has begun to attack Koo-fau. Other division of Chiang Kai-shek's troops is re- ported to have captured Sun Tai. "Hong Kong Evening Post."

GENEVA PROTEST.

Mr. Chao Hsin-chu and the Naval Conference.

Geneva, July 4.. Mr. Chao Hsin-chu has issued

with or conducive towards the restoration or development of peace or the unification of China" be add-i ed "may be taken accordingly with propriety whenever occasion re- quiries, provided China expresses no explicit opposition."

Other salient points in Mr. Yoshizawa's, speech were that no Chinese faction has ever paid res-

pect to the Chinese Constitution and that if the Nationalist Party gets into power it will exclude, all the other factions from the govern- ment of the country, which will immediately give rise to further troubles,

Secret Parties. He remarked that government by committee does not differ at ull from government by a dictatorship and that, under present conditions, no political faction in China can do without military force.. He con sidered that the power of the civil administration and of the police will avail little as there are in China many secret parties, besides labour federations, bandits and other sources of unrest.

In conclusion Mr. Yoshizawa said "Japan muat sympathize with but must not make a spoiled child the national aspirations of China

of her,"

General Muto, Commanding the garrison in the Kuangtung Terri tory, affirmed that the development of communications and exploitation of the natural resources of Man- churin 'could not make satisfactory progress owing to the lack of a fundamental policy on the part of Japan. In conclusion he remarked "Japan must have such a palley. both for the sake of the natives and for her own sake."
