FUSION PLANS STILL INDEFINITE.

THE CHINA MAIL.

or

The scheme for 2 fusion amalgamation of Italian shipping Into two large groups still forms a leading tople of discussion in the Italian Press, although the prin- ciple according to which the fusion is to be brought about is not yet known!

The "Revista Nautica" thinks that it will eventually come to a close association between the finan- cial groups which support indivi- dual companies and an exchange of interests, whereby members of the boards of administration of one group would join the boards of the other and vice versa. If the result of this method should be the form tion of a "united front." such a solution the journal says, would meet with general approval. Other forms of concentration, more parti cularly one in which some new organisation would he created on a compulsory fusion under State in fluence, meet with no support in any quarter.

Subsidy Statistics.

There has just been published the report prepared by Hon. Vincenzo Casalini, on behalf of the Shipping Committee of the Italian Parliament. It points out the larger allowance of 50 millions lire for subventioned steamship com panies, which during the fiscal year of 1927 will amount to 200 millions lira As a matter of fact, however, the larger burden amounts only to 28 million lire, taking into consideration that these services include also the mail lines from Naples to Palermo, and from Civita Vecchia to Terranova, operated until December 31, 1925,' by the Italian State Railway Administra tion, and the financial requirements of which were covered separately.

The new organisation of the subventioned lines provides for an increase of 50 per cent. in their. length over the old scheme, while

the increase of the exportses amounts only to 16 per cent.. aud a most important point of the organisation, says the report, is the fact that the new scheme provides connection between Italy and practically all the largest ports of
