A MESSAGE FROM THE KING.
Rugby, July 1.
A path of beacon fires from the Atlantic to the Pacific marked to-day's celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of Canada's confederation.
The people of Canada, to whom, special messages were sent by the King, the Governor-Ge... ral, and the Premier, Mr. Mackenzie King. are celebrating the Jubilee by a three days festival.
The leader of the party is Capt. D. McCallum, of the East Yorks (Peking Legation Guard) who, on the occasion of Home leave, determined to depart from the beaten "track" in the manner in- dicated, the warnings of his at Westminster Abbey friends that he would find Burma an insurmoustable obstacle for motor passage, merely strengthening his deter- mination to prove if possible. that such a journey was prac- ticable.

The party also hopes to get some game shooting on the way.
Capt. McCallum is panied by his wife (who is one of the Coates family, of cotton fame), Mr. Norman G. Lovell (who was with the Ray-Chap- man expedition in Mongolia) and is in charge of transport arrange- ments and Mr. Rumsey Williams, who will also help in the matter of transport.
Two cars are to be used on the expedition, Master & Buicks, fit- ted with special tanks, and with a full load capable of a cruising capacity of 1,000 miles without re-filling.
The party leaves Hong Kong for Haiphong on the "Tonking" on Wednesday and will commence the expedition carly in the fol- lowing week.

Ottawa, July 1,
A fiery chain of beacons blazing on the hilltops from ocean to ocean testifies to the universality of the. celebrations of the aixtieth anniversary of the confederation in connection with which the whole Dominion is Indulging in festivities, and prayers of thanksgiving.
Beginning to-day the prairie hamlets and scattered bands of Indians and Eskimos in the remote North West дге synchronising their celebrations with those of the capital where the jubilee was signalised with ayrens, the martial music of massed choirs singing the national anthem, and the peels of the new carillon bells in the tower of Parliament House, the first note of which was sounded wirelessly by His Majesty from London.
Birthday greetings are pouring in from the Dominions and foreign premiers. The Governor-General, Viscount Willingdon, sent a mea- sage in which he spoke of the proud loyal citizenship of the great growing nation.
Mr. Mackenzie King, in a stirring statement, commends the national rejoicing at peace, plenty, progress and prosperity attributable to the spirit of unity animating the nation.
The Arst official act of the United
Minister, States
Mr. Phillips, will be participation in the commemoration.
Even the prisoners are blessing the occasion with thanks for the remission of sixty minor sentences and the reduction of sentences for the more serious delinquents. Reuter.
