As long ago as March, 1926, when introducing the previous Army Estimates, the Secretary of State for War announced that such an experimental force was to be formed. But the summer and training season of 1926 passed without any sign of it. At last, in the autumn, came word that garages were being built at Tid- worth, and that Colonel Fuller had been selected to command the force, a choice so obviously apt us to be an apparent guar antee that this vital problem of mechanisation was being tackled in earnest. The demonstration to the Dominion Premiers in Novem ber, when the War Office disclosed their whole hand of mechanical trumps, seemed to set the seal on their intention.
