The weather was merci. fully cool.

Over 100 members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, drawn' from all the Hong Kong divisions, were on duty at the Race Course yesterday. Their services were helpful in rendering first-aid, to one or two ladies, overcome by the heat. The special arrange ments made by the Brigade in- cluded a motor cycle ambulance patrol along the line of march from the City to the Valley and the establishing of a first-aid station in the stand at the Race Course. The R.A.M.C. were also present-and-attended-to-a- few soldiers on parade who were affected by the sun.

Lost for ten days in the Sahara Desert with only a mugful, of water each for himself and three native servants, one of whom died from thirst, was among the experiences of Lieuten- ant Donald Cameron, of the Nigerian regiment. He arrived in London from Algiers, which was reached after a aix months" march across the Sahara from Kano (Nigeria) distance of 2,000 miles. He is the first Briton to traverse that part of the country. Lieutenant Cam- eron's 27th birthday occurred during the journey through the waterless region, in which the guide lost the way. Both rations and water were very scarce, and five of the 11 camels died. Only two days' water supply remained when the party reached an oasis.

The Home Secretary in mail weck made an Order prescribing a new scale of fores for motor' taxi- caba, to come into force on May 1. The scale is based on a charge

of 3d. for one-third of a mile or 34 minutes, with an initial charge of 6d, for distance 'not exceed- ing two-thirds of a mile or a time not exceeding 7 minutes. The charges for "extras" will be: 9d. for each bicycle, child's mulleart, or pèrambulator; 3d. for each other package carried outside; and 6d. for each additional person beyond two. The necessary alteration of the taximeters will take some little time to complete, and the Order provides that, until the meter in the cab has been altered, the fares payable

will be approximately three-quarters of those shown on the meter. A notice must be ex- hibited in the cab showing what are the proper fares. The new acale of fares is stated to apply to all motor taxi-cabs, including any which may, hereafter be licensed to carry two persons."

"Mr. Briting Sees Through," one of his best pieces of work in fiction. It was, as will be remembered, study of national psychology in the Great War. Mr. Wells has now in "Meanwhile," a new novel announced by Ernest Benn, dealt, on a similar plan, with the General Strike of last year and the coal strike. The two events are regarded as social and labour portents, and their origins and causes are pictured as Mr. Wella sees them. He passes his pictures Philip through the vision of Rylands, a young, ric istic conlowner.
