SOUTHAMPTON'S GRATIFYING

SUCCESS.

IN FACE OF WORLD COMPETITION.

CHILIAN CONTRACT. many of them far better situated as regards their proximity to the great coal and iron fields, Messre. Thornycrofts closely cut their price, well knowing that they might rely upon the hearty co- operation of the staff and men, employed to do their utmost to bring the contract to a successful conclusion. There is no doubt, however, that the excellence of the firm's design was a big con- tributory factor in bringing the. work to Southampton.

Confirmation has been received by Messrs. John I. Thornycroft and Co., Ltd, of the report from Valparaiso stating that they have

secured the contract for the con- struction of six destroyers for the Chilian Navy, reports a Home paper. This order, which is the largest that the firm has ever been called upon to complete, excluding the war period, is worth over £1,000,000, and of that figure something like £500,000 will, it is anticipated, be spent in wages and materials in South- ampton.

WARSHIPS IN PORT,

North Wall, Fortal; Baat Wall Thracian and Subs. L2 and L3; In Dock, Wivern, Verity and Moorlake; Talkoo Dock; Aphis; Kowloon Dock, Hermes and Ladybird: Coal- ing Camber, L9; Buoy 3, Dragon: Buoy 4 Dauntless; Buoy 6. Fro bisher; Buoy 7, Delhi: Buoy 8, Buoy 11. Sterling; Buoy 12, Bruce; Danne; Buoy 10, Somme and Sepoy;

Ruthenia and Kharki; Buoy 25, Buoy 18, Marazion; Buoy 18, U.S.S. Helena; Buoy 2A, H.S. Maine.

CARGO COOLIE'S FATAL FALL.

B.8.

The destroyers will, it is under- stood, each have a tonnage of A cargo coolie received severé about 1,320, and a length of ap-injuries to his head on Saturday proximately 280 feet, with a speed of 35 knots.

when he fell from the "Hydrangea" in to a junk. He died in the Kwang Wah Hospital yesterday,

A cargo boat master was this morning fined $10 by Lieut.-Comdr. J. B. Newill, D.S.O., R.N. (Deputy Harbour Master) for anchoring his boat within the cable area at Taikoktsul yesterday.

North Yard May Re-open. It is not yet decided in which part of the shipyard these vessels will be laid down, but it is quite possible that the North Yard, The contract was obtained in which hrs been closed since the the face of the keenest world-post-war boom, will be opened wide competition, for over twenty before long. The placing of the tenders were submitted by differ-present contract will not, how- ent nations, including a large ever, exhaust all the accommoda- number of Continental countries. tien at Woolston, for several vacant slips will be available for future contracts. Until the technical details in regard to a number of points are settled, it AMERICAN AUSTRALIA ORIENT will be impossible to order the material or lay the keels, so that an interval will necessarily elapse before the work is actively com- menced.

First Order of. Itu Kind. The order is the first of its kind that Messrs. Thornycrofts have ever received, for although they have tendered to foreign governments for destroyers, they have never previously been suc- cessful. It is difficult to deter mine the number of men who will be employed, but when work is in full swing it is likely that a thousand more than are usually required by the Woolston Yard will be needed.

There are certain outstanding technical details which have yet to be settled. This is, however, merely a matter of arrangement, and it is anticipated that the work will be in progress on the first vessel

in the very

near future.

In their endeavour to obtain the contract, which was exceed- ingly difficult in view of the large number of firms "fendering,

Messrs. Thornycrofts have car- ried out at Southampton, and their yard on the Thames, many minor contracts of naval and semi-naval character for foreign | governments in the past, the work completed being of vastly different character, for countries as widely diverse Brazil, Argentine, Siam, and Greece. They have, however, designed extensively for foreign govern- ments, and quite recently the Roumanjan Government accepted Thornycrofts' plans for destroy- ers which are to be built in Italian yards.
