TENNIS TOURNAMENT

DOUBLES.

HONDA'S VICTORY.

In the first of the semi-anala of the open championship doubles at the H.K.C.C. tenxis tour nament yesterday T. Honda and K. Akiyama defeated Yew Man-isun and Yew Mun-kit by three sets to

one.

Starting with more confidence than their opponents, the Japanese pair easily took three games off the reel. The Chinese pair were just beginning to get settled down, and by some accurate smashing on the part of Yew Man-kit took the next game,

With the score at 5-3 and 40-15 in their favour, the Japanese pair failed to clinch the issue and even tually lost the game, bringing the score to 5.4. By playing more ag gressively, however, they took the set at 7-5,

Play in the second set was of a higher standard. The Chinese, by better combination, managed to win at G-4, contenting themselves by benefitting from their opponents!

errors.

Determined Rally. Each pair took a game in the third set, the Chinese lending at -2-1. At this stage, the Japanese asserted themselves and took the next five games.

In the fourth set, the Chinese pair inade a determined rally and looked as if they would equalise¦ matters when they were leading by G-4. By keeping up their attack, however, Honda and his partner won the next three games quite comfortably,

Honda (the open singles holder) seemed to be playing below his usual form, but Aklyama rose to the occasion in fine style. Al though occasionally erratic, he was on the offensive most of the time.

Of the four players. Yew Man-i kit worked the hardest, placing' and smashing delightfully. Yew Man- tsun made a good many errors and was not forceful enough. -
