Whon the passengers on the Round-The-World cruise of the Canadian Pacific flagship Empress of Scotlard arrived at Bombay, they were treated to a remarkable and dramatic spectacle which they will remember for the rest of their lives. A mongoose, held on a leash, was put to mortal combat with a cobra, and the little animal, not much larger than a large-sized cat, made short work of its five foot hereditary enemy. The cobra, one of the most venotnous and virulent of all snakes, was first excited by the strains of a native flute and when fully alert the mongooKD" was released. It attacked at once and at first the mongoose looked like a total loan. It is completely anveloped in the, cobra's folds, bat in the lower photograph, the valiant little slayer has gained the apper -band and is biting the head off the cebra.
The mongoose is a household pet in India where it saves hundreds of lives by its vigilant care of the family and Its keen ear for and abiding hatred of nakes.
