The Queen was present special performance 01 The Legend of the Willow Pattern Plate," given at the New Gallery, Regent-street, in aid of the Queen Alexandra wing of the New Mid- dlesex Hospital and St. Monica's Home Hospital for Children. The Queen, who was attended by Mabell Countess of Airlic, Lady Joan Verney, and Mr. Gerald Chichester, her assistant private secretary, was received on arrival by Lord Ash feld, the Downger Countess of Gosford, the Hon. Ursula Lawley, Lady Bland-Sutton, Sir Richard Mathias, Captain N. A. Pogson, and Mr. Herbert A. Bromhead. Miss Ursula Laird presented a bouquet of flowers. In the front row of the Royal enclosure, in the company of the. Queen, were the Princess Royal, Princess Arthur of Con- naught, Lady Maud Carnegie, Prin- cene Helenu Victoria, and Princess Marie Louise.

The film, which was presented by the Gaumont Company, in conjunc- tion with Captain Pogson, follows the legent of the willow pattern pinte as it is told by word of mouth to-day in China. "What Price Glory," the un-] abashedly realistic film which be- gan its run the Plaza, Lower Regent-street, Piccadily Circus, is not so much a war film as a pic ture of life in the United States Army, writes the "Daily Mail's" Alm eritle. It shows in all its in- tensity the long rivalry between two first-rate professional soldiers. Their enmity flares up first when they are stationed in the Phillip pines, breaks out again in China, and reaches its culmination behind the lines in France.

Both these military heroes, are vigorous and recognisable types. Fingg, while conscientious and fine as a soldier, as a man is a great, loud-laughing, owencing brute, with a tiny core of son: ment lurking in- side his gigantic frame. Quirt is but more polished, more crafty,

EFFORTS TO REVIVE A НАВІТ.

Sir William Orpen, R.A., presidet at the first meeting, held at the Arts Club, London, of the commit- tee of eminent artists who are to select pictures for the national series of exhibitiona promoted under Sir Joseph Duvcen's' achemo for helping lesser-knowa British Д market for artists by finding

Sir Martin chairman of the executive commit- tee of the scheme, recapitulated its main outlines, and described it as calculated to improve the market, not only for the work of lesser- known artists, but for the work of all British artists. The picture- buying habit, which was strong twenty years ago, had dropped out in the face of fierce competition from other luxury commodities. To revive that habit was an essential) factor in any practical scheme to help British artists.

Mr. Edgar Selwyn, the Amer- ican manager who has come to London to present the play in Mr. Gilbert association with Miller, said:

I understand that the theme is considered permissible, but that certain of the lines are not. I am hopeful that the lines in question may be altered or taken out..

The play is to be done in London next month if the Lord Chamberlain's permission can be obtained. It is hoped that Mr. G. P. Huntley, who has not acted in London for some years, will be in the cast.

For the parts of the two girls, Loreli and her friend, Mr. Selwyn has in mind Miss June Walker and Miss Edna Hibbard, who played in the American production.
