"Give Us Men" is the subject of the thought-provoking editorial by Mr. A. de G. Sowerby in the April Issue of the "China Journal." We only hope that it will start think- ing in the one quarter where it can be of real benefit. The lack in China of leaders of high moral courage and integrity, together with executive ability and under- standing of the country's needs, is all too apparent in these chaotic timen,

The present issue of the "Jour- an" is a very menty number with rending for various tastes and moods. The writer of this review enjoyed particularly, a travel article beglaning in this issue entitled "The Chinese-Tibetan Ber- derland and its Peoples" by Dry Paul Huston Stevenson of the Peking Union Medical College. Dr. Stevenson conducted an anthropolo- gical reconnaissance in this out of the way reglan in the Summer, of 1926 and his paper--describing his adventures and experiences among the provincial tribes that came under his observation-isenter- taining and Informative. His graphic description of Chungking is well worth quoting:-

SIR WILLIAM VAN HORNE

LORD STRATHCONA

Among the Canadian books that have come to be recognized as stand- ard works a high place is taken by the serles known as "The Bakers of Canada." They were first published by George N. Morang. of Toronto, in 1904, and comprised twenty volumes covering Canadian history from Champlain to Macdonald and from the Atlantic to the Pacific Each period and historical figure discussed was dealt with by a scholar and writer particularly conversant with his subject, the result being to gather into the confined space of a few volumes a comprehensivo view of Canadian klatory.

With the more than twenty years that have passed since this series was first pubilahed there has taken place a vast amount of research and discovery In the history of this country, and episodes and characters of past days are now much more clearly seen than they previously were, Thits the Oxford Press of Toronto, into whose possession the plates of these books have passed, very wisely decided to issue a new and revised edition of the aeries. This has been produced under the ablo editorship of W. L Grant, M.A., LL.D., who has succeeded in greatly adding to the historien value of the work. Each volume has been carefully gono over and revised, and in some cases whole books have been re-written in the light of newly discovered facia

The height at which the city is built above the stream beds repre- sents no idle fancy-for the mean seasonal rise and fall of the Yang- tse at this point is in the neigh- bourhood of one hundred feet. This tremendous fluctuation of the water level nt the city gives a

Perhaps the most important improvement in the series is the addi-. tion of volume on the lives and work of Lord Strathcona and Sir Wit- liam Van Horne. It was obviously imperative that Western Canada should retelve more attention than was possible when the series first appeared, and no better way of doing it could be devised than in pre- senting a faithful account of the life work of the two men who, mare than anyone else, had to do with the foundation of the Canadian West. In John McNaughton's life of Strathcona and Walter Vaughan's life of Vaz lorne were the ideal books for the purpose. They are, of them- selver, a rich storehouse of information concerning the founding and building of the West. The dynamic force of Van Horne built the Cand- dian Pacific, the railroad that made Confederation an actual fact His work was and still is an epic of Canadian history and he, like Strathcona.. rightly belongs to that company of giants who, may properly be termed "Mukera of Canadı.”
