AN UNEXPECTED REPRIEVE

11 A Chinese detective, a former member of the Woosung-Shang- hal Constabulary, faced a firing. squad, looked death in the face unflinchingly-and lived to tell the story. What his fate will be no-one seems to know, as he is in the hands of workers of a $hang- hal concern, who apparently are bent on executing him, says, the "Shanghai Times."

The detealive is Sing Ching- sung. He was made a prisoner recently by striking workers of the Commercial Press, and held by them in their offices on Pao.

Last Friday was the date set for hia execution. Early in the morning Sing was dragged from the cffice and taken to an alley in the Chinese City. His captors stood him up against a wall, blindfolded. Sing asked that the blindfold be removed. After some hesitation this was done.
