CAPTAIN TANNER.
SINKING OF THE TARA RECALLED
Captain
The retirement of Tanner, who since 1891, has been a well-known personality on the Holyhead-Ireland Cross-Channel service, recalls an outstanding spie of the Great War, which culminat- ed in the historio dash, by the Duke of Westminster In command of a' fleet of armoured cars in the Libyan Desert.
Captain Tanner, "who is a native cf Wexford, was in command of the |"Earn" when that vosaal waa'at- tacked by two enemy submarines in the Eastern Mediterranean and |sunk, thirty-four of the prew losing their lives. That, was on Novein- Ber 5, 1015. "It was not until Jan- nary 28 of the following year that "the Admiralty were able to an- nounce the whereabouts of the sur- vivors-that they were in the hands of the Sanussi in the Libyan Desert, west of Egypt..
The story of the terrible trials and sufferings of the little band who survived and of their ultimato rescue by the Duke of Westminster, reads iko a chapter from some dar- Ing fiction. Captur Tanner went down with the Tara," being unable to struggle "clear until after, the vessel was under water. He was eventually picked up by the ship's Hfe-boat, huving received alight | injuries.
♫
Captain Tanner went to sen in 1882 as an apprentice and eined the London and North Western Rail way Company in 1841, so tha he has over 36 years' cross Channel servic to his credit. He was favourably noted by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty for bis conduct when the "Tara" was torpedoed. and was awarded the 10. M. for transpor, work during the
war.
