Towards the foot of the incline, Elliot Bay moved up slightly, and King of Hearts immediately dis- placed San Francisco Bay for second place. By the time that the Rock had been reached, the pack was closing on Bengal.

King of Hearts had caught Ben- gal at the quarter mile post and easily swept into the lead.

Into the straight, he led by two lengths, but victory was not yet First, by any means assured. Chesapeake Bay came up with a rush on the inside but was not good enough.
