An alpenstock inscribed "Doctor J. Bean," which was cast. up by the Bossons Glacier, Mont Blanc, is a grim souvenir of a tragedy of 57 years ago. Dr. Bean, an American, and the Rev. Mr. McCorkindale, a minister from Glasgow, in September, 1870, with eight guides, climbed to the summit of Mont Blanc but were overtaken by a blizzard in descending and lost their way. The snowstorm lasted for a week, and then the bodies of Mc- Corkindale, Bean and three guides were found in a crevasse.. The other bodies were not re- covered.

It is curious to notice how many women artists and wives of artists have refused to cut their hair short. I say it is curious because I believe it was a woman artist who first started the fashion (says a "Daily Chronicle" writer.) Miss Carrington, then! a Slade School student, bobbed her hair a year or two before the war, and for several years the only women in England who wore short hair were the women- folk of that illustrious Slade School generation which included Nash, the Spencers, Nevinson, Wadsworth, and Gertler.

HOW PEOPLE GET MUDDLED.

As another instance of people at Home being muddled in their ideas, it is interesting to mention that a leading London paper gives the name of Shanghai's defender, as Sun Shuari (meaning Sun Chuan-faug)..

Detailed reports from this part of the world, from an impartial source, must be particularly welcome just now.

EVERYTHING OF INTEREST.

The latest issue of the "Overland" includes the unique "seditious literature" care (as an illustration of Labour Union unreasonableness): the reports right from the beginning of -the Shanghai strike (including the cables about Chinese offi cials beheading strike agitators); the settlement of the Hankow dispute (with subsidiary statements): the China War and Canton's advance on Shanghai; and, as usual, all the local news, and China cebles.

WEALTH OF VARIETY..
