Extensive improvements are in hand for Victoria Dock. through which the greatest part of the im port and export trade of Melbourne !passes. Two 'contracts have lately been let. The Arst 'is for the con- struction of three sheds of the latest design for Nos. 19, 20 and 21 berths, this contract being obtained by Messrs. Thompson & Chalmers, of Melbourne, for £89,003. Work has already been begun on these sheds, and the contracts stipulate that they shall be completed by Septem- ber, 1927 The second contract has been let for the building of two Concrete, Customs sheds

at the corner of Pitt Street and Cowper Street, and the other at the corner of Cowper Street and Moun-

tain Street. A concrete wall will

'connect the two shoda. The con- tract price of this work In 57,767. and it will be ready by the end of April, 1927.

Modern Appliances. The three berths for which the sheds will be built have been com pleted only recently, and are at pro- Isent being used only by rollers. The sheds will make them the best equipped in the port. They will be 80 ft. long and will extend for 1.260 ft. along the wharf. Improved Customs accommodation has been provided, the offices belay provided for in the centre of the water side. lot the sheds, instead of at the end. as at present in other sheds. A delivery office will be placed near the roadway, in the sheds. Specin! modern appliances will be provided for the quick handling of cargo fpm the ships. Hatches will be opened in the roofs of the sheds, and huge electric cranes, with legs sufficiently high to allow for the passage of three lines of trucks beneath will be available for mov- ing cargo from the ships' holds into the sheds, instead of into trucks. Ships will be able to dis- charge into trucks with their own derricks, while the cranes, are similar to those at the Station Fier, at Port Melbourne,

To rectify propeller trouble, the "Empress of Scotland" went Into dry dock at Taikoo Dockyard immediately after her arrival ing Hong Kong with tourists last week. She is the largest vesaol to` have been dry-docked in Hong Kong. From the photo it will be seen that the "Empress of Scotland" does not. occupy the whole of the space and that Taikoo's dry dock can accommodate a vessel of even much larger dimensions.
