ENGINEERS FOR MOTOR SHIPS.

The report of the Board of Trade on the examinations of candidates for certificates of com petency in the Mercantile Marine states that since the tests for en- gineers were instituted in April 1863, some 92,442, certificates. have been granted.

It is pointed out in this official document that certificates of com petency issued to erigineers are of two kinds-ordinary certificates, valid for service on board steam- ahips; and motor certificates, en- titling the holder to serve on board ships propelled by internal combustion engines.
