Considering the hard-headed qualities usually attributed to the Chinese merchant, it is not a little extraordinary that he allows the incidence of the New Year holidays to produce such notable Incuna in his business operations. Thus, for some weeks ne auctions of piece goods will be held, in conscnance with the customary practice at this time and on all sides the same in- fluence is apparent. if the produce markets, in cotton and yarn trans- actions and in, the silk and tea sections, says the "North China Daily News."

The local cotton exchange will not re-open till February 7 and the next piece goods action will net take place till February 8.
