The hurricane chased the cutter into Carlyle Island, and after the engine caught fire the crew had to depend on enlis. Thereafter it was: sither a calm or a storm.

The influence of the type of fuel and the large boiler units is particularly striking in the case of the Torpedo Beat Destrover class of vessel in which are fitted boiler units having a heating sur- face of 8,000 sq. ft. and evaporating water at the rate of 18 1b rer square foot of heating surface por hour. The problems connected with the use of oil fuel had been solved to a sufficient extent in 1907 to per mit of its more extended applica- tion when the occasion arose. This satisfactory state of affairs was the result of stendy, and patient experi- mental work which had proceeded in nuval establishments, since the clos- ing years of the nineteenth century. That work proceeded from the scan- ty experience available at that time through all the possible means of atomisation by means of steam, air and oil pressure until an efficient system of the last-named type was evolved and which remains in use, The experimental work has
con-1 tinued to meet the increasing re- quirements for greater outputs in

Nevertheless experts are agreed that in time the change over from steam to oil will be as complete as was the change, from suil to steam.
