Hankow is 800 miles up the Yangtse River. As will be seen from this sketch map, Kiukiang is below (eastwards of) Hankow and the other storim centres, Shast, Ichang and Chungking, are further up. River vessels can go up 1,300 miles all the year round. H.M.S. "Hawkins" went to Hankow a few months ago but the River is not navigable for that dis tange just now. H.M.3. "Despatch," with Vice Admiral Tyr- whitt on board, is going to Nanking, a little above Shanghai.
