SHIPS TONNAGE NEW AMERICAN SHIP NEW NY.K. VESSELS,
VARIOUS USES OF AMBIGUOUS WORD EXPLAINED.
GROSS AND DEAD WEIGHT:
It is not
surprising thing really, but even seafaring people do find dificulty often in explain. Ing the varieties of tonnage which apply to a ship. To most landsmen as a rule the matter is a complete mystery. The trouble is that the word "tonnage" is ambiguous, and certainly the confusion which arises from the existence of the [con (weight) and the ton (volum
is apt to ho baffing. This basie of ship's tonnage is the "ton of mensurament." a space containing 100 cubic feet.
But complications arise because Shere are quite a number of ways ior dealing with tonnage. For
example: "gross tonnage" indicates the entire Interior capacity of a ship expressed in the tons befor referred to-100 cuble feet.
